Tooth extraction is when a tooth is completely removed from its socket, often called “pulling” a tooth. Dentists try to save teeth when possible, but if a tooth is too damaged for fillings or crowns, extraction may be needed. Reasons for tooth extraction include severe decay, fractures, impacted teeth, crowding, gum disease, or dental injuries. Before the procedure, your dentist will examine the tooth, take X-rays, and discuss your treatment and sedation options.
Sedation is often used during tooth extractions to help patients feel comfortable. Options include nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for light sedation, which lets you drive yourself afterward. Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill an hour before the appointment and requires someone to drive you. For more anxiety or longer procedures, intravenous (IV) sedation is used for deeper relaxation. In some complex cases, general anesthesia may be needed, typically in a hospital for more serious procedures like jaw surgery.
